An African success story

The gross domestic product of South Africa rose to a remarkable 6% in 1996, due mostly to a good rain season that boosted harvests and higher commodity prices. The economic upturn is fragile, but efforts to foster private business and growing infrastructure projects promise to sustain growth.

Article Abstract:
South African blacks have gained a larger share of stock-market wealth in the past five years, accompanied by a loss of wealth among whites. Some black critics charge that the shifting of wealth is benefitting only a small group of black business elite.
