An exceptionally good year in Spain
Article Abstract:
The Spanish buyout market increased in value from 217 million pounds sterling in 1997 to 472 million pounds sterling in 1998, with the number of deals increasing from 19 in 1997 to 34 in 1998. The large number of private to public deals resulted from many family-owned companies deciding to go public. A slower rise in buyout value was recorded for the smaller Portuguese market, which produced 6 deals valued at 52.5 million pounds sterling.

Continued growth in France
Article Abstract:
The buoyant French mergers and acquisitions market is expected to remain strong during the beginning of 2000, mainly driven by continued high returns on low interest rates and a generous pool of financial funding from both the UK and other European countries. The French buyout market reached a value of 3.5 billion pounds sterling during 1998, with the number of deals rising to 150.
