Jordan's new king
Article Abstract:
King Hussein of Jordan has died, and his successor is his son, King Abdullah, who has affirmed continuation of his father's policies. These include gradual democratisation and peace with Israel. The new king is unlikely to be able to rule in the same hands-on way as King Hussein was able to do, and there have been calls for greater press freedom. The influence that Jordan has in world politics may also be reduced by the death of King Hussein. High levels of unemployment and low economic growth are also problems that King Abdullah faces.

Pushed, or did he jump?
Article Abstract:
Algeria is to hold presidential elections by Feb 1999, according to President Liamine Zeroual, who has also announced that he does not plan to stand as a candidate. Zeroual has stated that he is seeking to strengthen democracy in Algeria, but the announcement may have resulted from divisions within the Algerian armed forces. Pressure on Zeroual appears to have mounted, whatever the reason for his announcement. He has faced the threat of a general strike, and there is danger of a social explosion due to unemployment and poverty.

Article Abstract:
Algerian politics seems likely to continue down the path it has taken under the leadership of Liamine Zeroual since the new government is led by no other than Zeroual himself and the offices that supposed to have changed leaders have not changed hands. The only hopeful sign of change is that political parties are beginning to bargain and that political repression is beginning to cease.
