Another buffeting for Dubrovnik
Article Abstract:
Dubrovnik, Croatia, has seen a drop in tourist numbers as a result of the Balkans conflict, which has hit the town's economy, and there are plans to develop shipping and trading, using high technology. Croatia as a whole has seen a drop in economic growth rates as a result of the conflict, from a annual average of 6% from 1994 to 1997 to some 3% in 1998, with lower growth still forecast for 1999. Slovenia, to the north, shares a border with Austria, and has been less affected, but Croatia cannot detach itself from the Balkans.

The end of the pier show
Article Abstract:
Bognor Regis, England, is a seaside resort which has been affected by a decline in seaside holidays in the UK. Landlords in these resorts have increasingly changed accommodation to bedsits and welfare claimants occupy many of these. Unskilled household heads and single mothers are problems for social services in Bognor. The government is funding improvements in many resorts, which still attract holidaymakers though those who go to such resorts tend to be older, they spend more than younger people.
