Art for whose sake?

The fact whether work of art is given the identikit feature of almost every urban renewal programme across the British Isles is questioned. Critics believe that the quality of contemporary public art is a product of the current enthusiasm to integrate 'art' as a strategy for social inclusion and economic regeneration.

The Belfast City Partnership Board is trying to promote a sense of community, citizenship and sustainability in Belfast through city planning. Its fundamental problem is the divide between catholic and protestant communities. The city's center is increasingly seen as beloning to both communities.

UK architects are viewing Northern Ireland, and particularly Belfast, as a potential growth area. Holding back potential growth are complex rules regarding development, especially housing. Building codes and regulations in Northern Ireland are different than they are in the rest of the UK.
