Asian banks increasingly issue NCDs to provide funds for infrastructure
Article Abstract:
The issuance of negotiable certificates of deposit (NCD) by banks is booming in Asia due to the demand for long-term funds to construct infrastructure projects. NCDs are time deposits for institutions which are initially sold to institutional investors and trade on the secondary market. They provide an alternative source of funding amid the slow growth in savings deposits. NCDs are useful for retail banks without big branch network.

Big Japanese banks seen writing off many bad loans
Article Abstract:
Many believe that Japan's major banks will write off a substantial part of their problem loans within the current fiscal year. Japanese bankers have tended to avoid recording losses but the problem has become too big to ignore. Several banks, including Fuji Bank Ltd. and Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Ltd., will incur losses for the year ending in Mar. 1996 as a direct result of the loan writeoff.
