Asian tech shares: got yours?(2)
Article Abstract:
Foreign investors, particularly US investors, are speculating in Asia's technology companies and secondary stock exchanges are booming. However, the contributions of Asian fund managers to the important and growing sector of the Asian economy continues to be negligible. For instance, only two out of the 1,500 mutual funds registered in Hong Kong specializes on Asian technology. About 50% of the stock brokerage firms in Asia cover telecommunications but the lack of biotech analysts also creates a void in the critical mass needed to launch specific technology funds.

Signs of economic progress fuel market, but risks remain
Article Abstract:
South Korean shares are predicted to climb up by the end of 1999 until mid-2000, making them an attractive buy for longer-term investors. After nearly increasing twofold in 1998, South Korean funds have gained 10% in the first week of 1999. The optimism prevailing among analysts as well as investors in the South Korean stock market is attributed to the stabilization of the currency, the lowering of interest rates, the reduction of debts and restructuring measures prescribed by the International Monetary Fund as part of a $58 billion bailout package.
