Asia's top 200 corporates
Article Abstract:
The top 200 companies of Asia, 1996-97, are led by Hong Kong real estate firms. They held firm despite devaluation of currencies which have forced corporations of Asia to take stock. More debt rating downgrades are ahead. Equity prices, which are volatile, are indicative of health. Finance companies are being closed in Thailand, assets to be auctioned. Conditions have been imposed on countries by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Taiwan and Singapore economies are in better shape. Giants of Japan look strong, but ex-import volumes are down. Companies of Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand do not have prominent spots in the list.

How Europe can succeed in Asia
Article Abstract:
European companies may improve their investments and trade with Asia by committing their best resources to development in Asia and working to open trade by articulating their common interests. There has been tremendous growth in trade between Europe and Asia. Although Asia has protected their markets, they share certain interests with European companies: the elimination of trade barriers, the loosening of investment rules, and the definition of customs policies. European companies hope that the March 1996 trade summit in Bangkok will help open trade further.
