Recent cases in European law
Article Abstract:
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) and the Court of First Instance (CFI) have dealt with cases covering a wide range of issues recently. Rulings have, among other things, found that Italian controls on road-haulage tariffs and retail licenses are compatible with the EU Treaty, accepted the imposition of higher national standards on the treatment of battery hens but not on foodstuffs labelling and obliged the Commission to treat complaints of unlawful state aids or anti-competitive practices with due regard. The main Court has given several rulings on the interpretation of the 1968 Brussels convention on jurisdiction and the enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters.

Climbing the European ladder
Article Abstract:
Dutch concern Altrex, which supplies a wide range of access material for consumer and industrial use, was the subject of a management buyout from BET in 1994. This has allowed it to improve its internal flexibility, using its workforce more effectively. Since the buyout, it has increased its market share, and profits have risen above predictions. This will form a sound basis for further expansion in Europe.
