The high life
Article Abstract:
The Hill Club in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka, was created in the 19th century as a planters' club. It still bears many signs of its colonial past, including having a strict dress code and allowing women only in the billiard room. Its membership fell to very low levels in the late 1960s following the departure of many British expatriates, and this finally forced the club to begin admitting Sri Lankan members and taking in tourists to raise funds. The membership committee operates to strict guidelines, and applications from politicians are rejected.
