Australia commissions new air traffic control systems
Article Abstract:
The Australian government officially commissioned its Advanced Air Traffic System (AATS) in Feb 2000. The AATS includes two area control centers at Melbourne and Brisbane, four terminal centers at Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Cairns, four simulators, communications equipment and control and monitoring systems. The AATS is said to be the first system in the world to completely integrate radar, automatic dependent surveillance and controller pilot datalink communications with highly sophisticated flight data processing.

BAA-led group buys TBI's Australian stakes

BAA, the UK airport group, has announced that a consortium has acquired TBI's equity in its australian airport investments, exluding Hobart airport, for A$83 million. The consortium consists of BSA, the Australian Infrastructure Fund and the Utilities Trust of Australia. The purchase includes TBI's 16.1% investment in Perth International Airport and its 19.9% investment in Perth International Airport and its 19.9% stake in Northern Territory Airports, comprising Darwin, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.

Surviving the crisis in Asia
Article Abstract:
The Australian government completed phase two of its airport privatization program which was continued in 1998. Federal Airports Corp airports have been sold with the exception of Sydney, Essendon airport in Victoria and three others in the Sydney Basin. Airports sold in phase one had a mixed record in their first year of operations due to the Asian economic crisis. The third and last phase of the airport sales will involve the Sydney Basin airports.
