Australian infrastructure financing and Asia's crisis
Article Abstract:
The economic crisis in Asia has prompted observers to consider the prospects for limited recourse financing in Australia. It seems likely that Australia will continue to fund infrastructure assets for the foreseeable future, in at least the volumes seen previously. It may be possible to set new pricing. The immediate project environment, rather than the host country's macro-economic circumstances or policies, contains the key determinants of success of infrastructure financing. Several forthcoming deals in Australia will be a test of whether this is the case.

Increasing support for private projects
Article Abstract:
There has been increased activity in project finance transactions during the past five to 10 years in most geographical areas and industry sectors. Project finance transactions have traditionally been funded using bank debt, with occasional use of equity a subordinated debt, with public and institutional debt markets less frequently used. Alternative finance sources will have to be sought as the availability of bank loans fall.

Private financing for Canadian jails
Article Abstract:
The construction of a new jail in New Brunswick, Canada, is being financed by C$19.4 million-worth of private funding placed by Scotia Capital Markets. The Miramachi Youth centre is Canada's first privately-funded correctional facility and will be built by Wackenhut Corrections Canada Corp. It is expected that Canadian state governments will now consider other private funding projects, including two superprisons.
