Austria/Germany: Alliance between Elk and Bien-Haus
Article Abstract:
Elk vice president Erich Weichselbaum and Bien chairman of finances Roland Pohlmann both confirmed plans for an alliance through the mutual acquisition of shares. Elk, a Austrian based manufacturer of prefabricated houses, has already bought a 5% share of Bien, a manufacturer of prefabricated houses based in Germany. Zenker Hausbau, the manufacturer of prefabricated houses based in the Austrian province of Styria, is a part of the Bien-Haus group. The alliance is said to be a result of the recession in the prefabricated house market. The intention is to group interests in central sectors, like tpurchase and employment of material and production. Bien builds approximately 1,500 prefabricated houses annually and has a turnover of Sch 2,17bn, whereas Elk holds a market share of 30% in Austria with 1,300 houses being constructed yearly, resulting in a turnover of Sch 1,35bn. Zenker participates in the Austrian market with approximately 200 fabricated houses.
