BC Rail finds younger train market

BC Rail was pleasantly surprised to discover that people as young as 35 years old would pay $1,375 for a trip from Vancouver to Prince George aboard its latest train, the Whistler Northwind. The company estimates as many as 6,000 passengers will ride the train from May to September, with weekly departures from Vancouver and Prince George. BC Rail spent as much as $12 million in promoting the new luxury train service, which it expects to recover within three years.

Horizon lauds infomercials

Horizon Brewing Pres Ian MacLennan attributes US infomercials for increased awareness of the Beer Machine home brewing kit, making the firm achieve C$4 million in sales in 1998. Citing the compatibility of the infomercials with the product, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia-based firm said it is now airing 30-minute advertisements and a new, two-minute version on WIC Television's BCTV, the CHUM Group and the ITV network.
