More market reserves in Brazil
Article Abstract:
Laws passed in Oct 1984 in Brazil restrict foreign investment in the information technology industries to mainframe computer firms. The laws, known as Politica Nacional de Informatica or the informatics laws, also restrict foreign investors to a 30 percent holding in any Brazilian technological firm, and empower Brazil's Secretariat for Informatics to reject import licenses applied for by foreign makers of digital equipment. The reactions of IBM and the Reagan Administration to the laws are examined, as are the political background in Brazil which led to their passage and the likelihood of similar Brazilian laws being enacted to cover biotechnology, chemical, pharmaceutical, and mineral industries.
