BRIDGING THE RADIAL GAP
Article Abstract:
Bridgestone ACC India Ltd (BAIL) was set up in January 1996 as a joint venture between Bridgestone and Associated Cement Companies (ACC) at a cost of Rs345 crore to produce radial tyres for passenger cars. Bridgestone has 64 percent stake, Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco) and ACC together hold 26 percent stake and Mitsui & Co holds 10 percent stake in BAIL. The commercial production is likely to start by March 1998. It has bagged the contract for original equipment manufacture (OEM) for Matiz and Hyundai cars. It is likely to supply tyres for Telco, Ford and General Motors. Bridgestone Research Centre in Japan makes the quality control checks for tyres developed in India. Only 30-40 percent of the passengers cars use radial tyres in India. The radial tyres cost 25 percent more than cross ply tyres. The demand for tyres is likely to be one million by 2000 AD. BAIL plans to educate the customers on the benefits of radial tyres by advertising and issuing pamphlets. It has chosen 270 distributors and plans to set up exclusive outlets. It plans to bag 20 percent share of the replacement tyre market. It expects the OEM market to contribute 60 percent to its sales by 2002 AD. (rk)
