Viatel agrees to buy Destia in stock swap
Article Abstract:
Viatel Inc. has reached an agreement to acquire Destia Communications Inc. in a deal worth $608.4 million (581.9 million euros). Viatel will expand its presence in the European market as a result of the deal. Viatel is a provider of global telephone and data services. Destia is a provider of long-distance phone services to residential and business clients. Stockholders in Destia will be given 0.445 share of Viatel for every common share of Destia.

Vodafone to merge with Bell Atlantic in U.S. market
Article Abstract:
Vodafone AirTouch PLC and Bell Atlantic Corp. have reached an agreement to merge their cellular operations in the US. The merger will create a new telecommunications giant that will provide wireless services throughout the US. GTE Corp.'s wireless operations will eventually be incorporated into the merger. GTE is Bell Atlantic's merger partner. The venture will be the largest cellular operator in the US.
