Press pressure
Article Abstract:
Resignations of two newspaper editors in Malaysia may indicate that Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has accepted that Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim poses a threat to his leadership. The ethnic-Malay newspapers, which the two men edited until Jul 1998, are both very influential amongst the majority Malay population. Both editors are strong Anwar supporters. The United Malays National Organization, which is the main party in the ruling coalition, owns one of the newspapers.
