Opening the future
Article Abstract:
Thai entrepreneur Charn Uswachoke and his Alphatec Electronics are leading Thailand's effort to expand its electronics industry and move into more profitable arenas than assembly operations. Two new computer-chip foundries in Chachoengsao province, one a memory-chip foundry built jointly with Texas Instruments and the other a logic-chip maker with technology from Rockwell Semiconductor, may soon anchor a research and production center. A large workforce and improved communications and transport make Thailand attractive.

Walking tall: Thai businessman corners chip market
Article Abstract:
Charn Uswachoke hopes to create a new silicon valley in Thailand, centered on two huge new wafer fabrication projects in Chchoengsao, 40 km east of Bangkok. His Alphatec group, together with three wealthy Thai business families, owns 60% of the SubMicron semiconductor project, and 74% of a new joint venture with US-based Texas Instruments. The 800-hectare high-tech industrial development Charn envisions would house design and assembly plants and a research institute, benefitting the country as well as business.

Chip magnet: Thailand is set to enter the silicon-wafer business
Article Abstract:
Charn Uswachoke's plans to build Thailand's first silicon-wafer foundry should benefit the country, local manufacturers, and his own Alphatec Electronics. It will make Thailand more attractive for subcontracting integrated-circuit (IC) manufacture and assembly by cutting more than two months out of the present cycle and eliminating shipping costs. The plant will complement Charn's growing family of IC companies and fits his vision of doing work that large companies no longer want to do themselves.
