Back to the future: Eva Jiricna, erstwhile Czech exile famed for her staircases, is going back to her roots with her design for the Prague orangery
Article Abstract:
Eva Jiricna left her native Czechoslovakia in 1968 and became a British citizen in 1976, forming her own architectural practice in 1984. She is the daughter of an architect and trained in Prague, and its best known for her interiors, especially her staircases. Jiricna insists that designing a staircase is as demanding as designing a whole building. Shops, restaurants and lavish apartments are also strong features of the practice's work. She designed the orangery for Prague Castle, in her capacity as architectural adviser to President Havel in 1993, and is currently working on Anderson Consulting's new Prague offices.

Wake up to reality
Article Abstract:
Architect Zaha Hadid's ideas have changed over her years in practice to accommodate function, but she continues to be committed to innovational form. One of her schemes which demonstrates this commitment is the visitor's pavilion in the newly-developed festival site at Weil-am-Rhein, Germany. The building appears to rise as a natural mound from the ground. Its roofs are also paths which slope from the ground like a long bridge. That building is part of the natural landscape, whereas another schemes of Hadid's, the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, is a response to the cityscape.
