Banks face a slowdown, but not a crisis
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's banking sector is expecting a decline in earnings growth despite the public's fear that the worsening Asian currency crisis may lead to a domestic financial crisis. Tony Liu, a banking analyst at ABN Amro Hoare Govett Asia, reacting to fears of possible problems with Hong Kong's small banks, says that the banking segment is likely to remain strong because of adequate capitalization and excellent liquidity. Meanwhile, Hayden Meadows, a banking analyst at UBS Securities predicts that the four largest banks in Hong Kong will post a 12% per-share earnings increase in 1997.

To prosper, China's banks need competition
Article Abstract:
China's commercial banking system has be to restructured if the country is to achieve its envisioned economic growth. The biggest hurdle to such a bank reform is the need to finance inefficient state-owned enterprises, which is a central aspect of the country's historical and political ideology. Opening the banking sector to competition and to free market forces scares many Chinese economic planners because of the expected massive unemployment that would follow.

Asia's savers need alternatives to banking
Article Abstract:
Asian economies are becoming increasingly dependent on banks as sources of capital rather than developing their own capital markets. Critics fear that this dependence on banks does not bode well for the region as it would reduce Asian savers' opportunities to invest in the long-term. They believe that Asian economies should explore other channels that can give them higher returns for their savings.
