Acer seeks working capital: share offering planned for overseas in January

Taiwan's computer company Acer Inc will hold an international stock sale in Jan 1999. It will offer 200 million shares, which at $1.33 per share as of Nov 30, 1998, will raise $260 million. The company will use the proceeds from the sale mostly as working capital. The Acer move will be the second stock offering by a Taiwanese high technology company in two months. In November, $184 million worth of shares in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co were sold by a Taiwan government fund.

PC industry chooses China: earthquake will fuel investment, causing headaches for Taipei, U.S

Taiwanese computer and peripherals manufacturers are moving production lines to China to reduce costs and to cope with the cutthroat competition in the market. Another reason for going abroad is the increasing pressure from large foreign customers brought about by the devastating earthquake that hit the island in Oct 1999. Among these Taiwanese firms that have already invested in the mainland are Acer Inc and Asustek Computer Inc.
