Biotech heads for the big time
Article Abstract:
The biotechnology industry is being touted as the 21st-century equivalent of the electronic phenomenon of the 20th century. According to an estimate, the world market for biotechnology in 1990 was worth 5.1 billion European currency units (Ecu) and is projected to rise to Ecu83.3 billion by the year 2000. The appeal of biotechnology lies in its applicability to the production of goods and services, with much of the benefits to be gained by agriculture and food industries. However, stringent regulations, environmental worries and public concern may hamper the expected explosion of the industry. Nonetheless, domestic legislations can be circumvented through the establishment of joint ventures or subsidiaries outside a company's home country. Furthermore, apprehension by environmentalists and the public can be allayed by emphasizing the potential environmental benefits of biotechnology.

Canon goes flat out
Article Abstract:
Canon Inc. launched a new initiative in product development in 1996 because it has been falling behind on technological innovation. The new approach incorporates a development headquarters employing 1,000 people in Tokyo, and six centres in other countries. The head of the initiative anticipates that work will be based on multimedia output devices, with an emphasis on flat-screen technology, but Canon continues its work on other projects, such as solar cell development.

Will the Web be a money-spinner?
Article Abstract:
The World Wide Web (WWW) could be of particular benefit to small and medium-sized companies, which will be able to use it for advertising. Larger companies already have a strong advertising presence through other channels, and will probably use the WWW mainly as part of their approach to customer services. Companies considering establishing an Internet presence should consider the importance of a good design for a WWW page.
