Bungle in the jungle
Article Abstract:
Brazil has set up a high-tech manufacturing zone in the Amazon. The Manaus low-tax zone was partly set up in order to colonize the region, with tax breaks to persuade companies that distance from suppliers, customers and raw materials was not important. Brazil also sought to produce electronic products to reduce dependence on imports. There is a population of 1.2 million people in Manaus, but critics point to the low local value-added, and lack of development of a self-sustaining industrial center in the region.
