Article Abstract:
Japanese firms in 1989 were urged by Japan's securities industry to engage in an active program of mergers and acquisitions. Much of the merger activity that resulted took place outside Japan. The bear market of 1992-92 has now made many Japanese firms themselves vulnerable to takeover offers.

Bidding for Europe's takeover business
Article Abstract:
There remains a great deal of corporate takeover activity taking place on the European continent, and US and British banks are vying for a bigger piece of the action. With such activity at a minimum at home, these banks have the muscle and flexibility to seek out foreign deals.

A European single market for business is still some way off, despite the forthcoming launch of the euro. Governments need to reduce barriers to merger activity and to stop protecting state-owned businesses.
