Bitter harvest: tension rising over Kim's anti-military campaign
Article Abstract:
South Korean Pres Kim Young Sam intensified his anti-military policy by commemorating the 200 pro-democracy demonstrators killed by soldiers in the city of Kwangju in May 1980. Kim also criticized his two predecessors, Chun Doo Hwan and Roh Tae Woo, for having strengthened their power by crushing the Kwangju uprising and for having taken control of the country illegally in 1979. Some opposition politicians are calling for a new investigation of the massacre and for the prosecution of those responsible, some of whom still hold positions of command.

Mr Clean comes clean
Article Abstract:
South Korean legislator Lee Hai Chan does not entertain people asking for political favors in exchange for contributions unlike most of his colleagues. An ex-dissident turned opposition politician, Lee's stand on clean politics helped him win a record majority in his district during the Mar 1992 general election. Lee divulged his income before stepping into office because of his commitment to honesty. Transparency has been the battlecry of Lee in his fight to stop political corruption in South Korea.

Grease that sticks
Article Abstract:
Official corruption remains rampant in Japan, Taiwan, and S Korea although growing public anger and resulting govt efforts to crack down on the problem may be helping a little. Social relationships and assumptions reinforce bribe-taking, and the spread of govt constantly gives it new areas to regulate and new reasons to seek official permission, hence new opportunities for graft. New govts came to power in all three countries in 1992 and 1993 based partly on their promises to attack such corruption.
