Booking a spec in history: the Architectural Association is celebrating its 150th anniversary this week
Article Abstract:
The Architectural Association was founded in 1847 by a small group of young men, led by Robert Kerr and Charles Gray. It attracted architects such as Norman Shaw and Philip Webb during by the end of its first decade, and it played an imported role in the future of the profession. It put forward the idea of an architectural diploma, which was taken up by the Royal Institute of British Architects. Women were admitted in 1920, but there wasn't a woman president until 1969. The school became more international and changes to state funding led to fewer UK students. It suffered a financial squeeze and radical financial surgery was required.
