Borderless economy: four top executives talk about trade prospects
Article Abstract:
The development of a niche in the Asian market remains a foremost concern for some international companies, supplanting doubts that the Asian market potentials of Europe-based companies are handicapped by regional changes. However, some businesses have found it increasingly difficult to protect domestic markets. These were among the views expressed by Teruo Hotta of Itochu Corp, Victor Fung of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, David de Pury of Asea Brown Boveri Group and Eric Bridgen of Acer Group, four of the delegates to the Oct 1992 World Economic Forum in Hong Kong.

The triumph of trade
Article Abstract:
Lack of progress in international trade agreements, particularly Gatt, may endanger East Asia's remarkable economic progress. Moreover, worries about the potential of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) to undermine Gatt have prompted calls for an East Asian trading bloc. However, the trade agreements that deserve to be imitated are those that, like Nafta, ease rather than limit the exchange of goods and services between different countries' companies. East Asia can exemplify how a freer trade order will engender growth and prosperity.
