Brave new world; new Western boss will shake up Japan's Mazda
Article Abstract:
Henry Wallace was named president of Mazda Motor on Apr 12, 1996 and becomes the first foreign head of a major Japanese corporation. Ford Motor Co has acquired a controlling stake in Mazda by increasing its ownership share to 33.4%. Ford has installed Wallace to take an active role at Mazda where he is expected to address problems with the company's overdependence upon its keiretsu system of suppliers. Auto analysts contend that the keiretsu's tightly knit system that keeps out foreign companies has become an expensive way to source parts.

Political football; old wounds are reopened as Japan and South Korea battle for the 2002 World Cup
Article Abstract:
South Korea and Japan are competing to host football's World Cup in 2002, the first time the event will be held in Asia. The competition to hold the event reflects the history of troubled relationships between the two countries. Many South Koreans hold bitter memories of Japanese occupation of their country and feel that losing the event to Japan would be a disaster. The Japanese are taking a much more low-key attitude towards hosting the games and have down-played any sense of rivalry towards the South Koreans.
