Brazil: Alcatel operations reviewed
Article Abstract:
Alcatel expects to boost its mobile phone operation in Brazil following the introduction of the GSM network in 2000. The French telecom equipment manufacturer is the leader in the Brazilian market of long distance networks, and in the broadband market (especially the ADSL where Alcatel corners 50% of the market). The company is number two behind Cisco in the X.25, ATM, IP and other data transmission systems. Alcatel is banking on a stable turnover in 2001 (from the EUR 664mn it posted in 2000) and a decline in 2002 (to around EUR 500mn) because of the crisis.
