Brazil prepares for Cardoso without coat-tails
Article Abstract:
Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso is currently around 13% ahead of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, his main rival, in the run-up to the country's presidential election in Oct 1998. However, his Brazilian Social Democratic Party is in danger of being defeated in several states, and it is likely that the new Congress will be much less willing to agree with Cardoso's views than the existing one. A victory for Cardoso would be less certain if it were necessary to raise interest rates again.
