Brazil's steady nerve
Article Abstract:
Brazilian president, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, has been re-elected and faces challenges in economic policy, but has also achieved a great deal. Inflation has been controlled, and Cardoso has restructured the Brazilian economy. Privatizations have been carried out and trade barriers lowered. Brazil still suffers from illiteracy, poverty, violence and other problems, and is vulnerable due to insufficient control of public spending. International aid should be given to Brazil but the fiscal deficit also has to be controlled.
