Fanuc's narrowing lead
Article Abstract:
Fanuc Ltd., the world's leading maker of computer numerical-control (CNC) devices, is seeing its share shrink as more manufactures adopt open systems. The company has built its market dominance by supplying closed systems, ensuring a captive market for its CNC hardware and software. But with the development of open systems that allow manufacturers to operate machine tools on a variety of platforms, manufacturers are now reprogramming their CNCs themselves. For the year ended March 1997, the company has a recurring profit of Y52.4 billion on consolidated sales of Y183.7 billion ($1.65 billion).

Strong results may revive Creative's stocks
Article Abstract:
Creative Technologies Ltd.'s stock price may be pulled by the company's strong 1996 financial results, but the long term prospects are yet unknown. The company is an attractive short term investment, but it may not be able to sustain its profitability, say investment advisers. Creative Technology reported a $167 million profit for the 1996 fiscal year and is a good performer that saw share prices rise to S$36.5 per share.
