Britain opts out of Europe
Article Abstract:
The merger of British Aerospace (BAe) with GEC-Marconi will create the second-largest defence concern in the world after Lockheed. Both companies are British, and this may assist with obtaining approval for the deal. Through the recent purchase by Marconi of US defence contractor Tracor, the new BAe will have a strong presence in the US defence and aerospace sectors. The deal has been received with dismay in France and Germany. French defence and aerospace firm Thomson-CSF has stated that the merger will hamper European restructuring, while DaimlerChrysler Aerospace has claimed that balanced European horizontal mergers will not now be possible.

Israel's missile nightmares
Article Abstract:
Iran has carried out a test flight of a missile which could mean that Israel, Turkey, and parts of Saudi Arabia are vulnerable. Israel is developing its Arrow-2 anti-missile missile and has aid from the US. The Arrow could cost more than its initial budget. Iran may have developed its missile due to weaknesses revealed during a war with Iraq during the 1980s. Iran could not retaliate to missile attacks by Iraq during that war, and there were thousands of civilian casualties.
