Article Abstract:
Indonesian President BJ Habibie has made significant progress in several areas of his plans to pattern the Batam Island, Indonesia, after Singapore. Habibie successfully built an airport and highway and is fighting to create a container port similar to that of Singapore. Batam's population has soared almost tenfold since 1978 to 250,000 people in 1998. The number of companies has reached 10,000 in 1998, an increase from 10 in 1978, which produce everthing from oil-drilling to television sets.

Uneven appetite for gold in Asia clouds predictions for continued price rally
Article Abstract:
Asia's strong demand for gold has often infected other markets, driving world gold prices upward. However, industry analysts are now warning that demand for gold in some Asian markets is not as great as initially expected. They believe that gold prices will continue to increase but this will be due more to liquidity flows rather than the forces of supply and demand. Declines in gold demand have been reported in China, Japan and Singapore.

Fears arise among bankers over derivatives contracts hiding in the books of banks and firms throughout Asia. These concerns may aggravate the already weak financial condition of the region. Several bankers worry that things may happen that are more damaging than the disclosures by PT Bank Ekspor Impor Indonesia that it faces losses from foreign-exchange contracts made when the rupiah was much more sound.
