Presentation is critical to successful retailing yet it poses a continuing challenge for online retailers even as the electronic commerce market expands. These online retailers must address a number of significant design issues to make online shopping a pleasure for Canadian customers. These basic elements, which in many ways reflect the simplicity of the local grocery store, include navigation, layout, inventory, samples, point of sales, customer service, marketing and promotion.

Marketers stand to gain real benefits from 'free' services on the Internet, including free access, free electronic mail and free content. The concept has become synonymous with just about any Internet content- related business model. The challenge for these marketers will be to learn how to benefit from the opportunities provided by such free services. They must understand online consumers to be able to direct highly effective marketing messages to these target online users.

Kellogg, YTV get in the box

Kellogg Canada has partnered with YTV in a new Web-based promotion dubbed YTV Gigabytes. In mid-Dec 2000, Kellogg launched a new limited-time YTV Gigabytes cereal, where consumers can find a pass code that allows them to check in at www.ytvgigabytes.com, a site produced internally by YTV. In the site, users can enter a contest to win one of two IBM Netvista SX series laptops, or one of 18 $500 shopping sprees at an IBM retail or online store.
