The Burmese beyond
Article Abstract:
Burma's democracy movement faces a turning point, given the array of forces arrayed against the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) and the support the country's youth give to the movement. SLORC's political control requires it to make economic decisions centrally, but that has destroyed Burma's economy, creating widespread unrest. An overextended army and the rising power of outside news agencies and the like create further tensions, though resolving these pressures through conflict would be disastrous.

September of her days
Article Abstract:
An overview of Aung San Suu Kyi's role in promoting democracy in Myanmar is presented. In 2007, Suu Kyi was imprisoned before being placed under house arrest. Calls for her release were increasing due to the killings of protesters on September 26 and 27, 2007. It is expected that castigating Suu Kyi could increase the possibility of a revolt in the country.
