Discipline vs democracy
Article Abstract:
The economic and political views of Philippine Pres Fidel Ramos and of former Singapore PM Lee Kuan Yew are presented. Lee suggested that a political system based on disclipline more than on a free-for-all democracy is more effective in improving the standard of living of the majority of its constituents. In contrast, Ramos believes that it is more important to first establish a true democracy to achieve real development. Although economic progress in the Philippines has been slow, the country is well on its way to progress because it has reached a national consensus to achieve progress.

Mr Lee goes to Manila
Article Abstract:
Some highlights of the visit to the Philippines in 1993 of former Singaporean PM Lee Kuan Yew are presented. Lee remarked that for the Philippines to develop, it needs more discipline rather than more democracy. This statement drew criticisms from Senate members and other government officials, and also drew a cold rebuttal from Philippine Pres Fidel Ramos. However, many Filipinos would agree with Lee's statement, as many of them continue to suffer from to the endless domination of the country's economy by monopolists who thrive because of coddling by corrupt public officials.
