Burning memories: Tokyo reflects on the night 50 years ago that U.S. bombers set it ablaze
Article Abstract:
The 50th anniversary of the Mar 9, 1945, firebombing of Tokyo has evoked many forms of remembrance and sorrow on all sides. The event is little discussed among Japanese families, and no permanent museum memorializes the event, but many who lived through it have taken the opportunity to recollect that night and to share their thought and experiences with younger generations. Few individual Americans express remorse for the deed and most Japanese bear no specific grudge, but many on both sides showed sorrow.

Cooking up memories
Article Abstract:
Chairman Mao Zedong did a great deal to help the ordinary people of China, according to Tang Ruiren, who was brought up in Mao's hometown and met him in 1959, when she was 30 years old. She was so inspired by his concern for ordinary people that she later opened the Mao Family Restaurant, which overlooks the house where he was brought up. This establishment now attracts more than 100 visitors a day and is complemented by three affiliated outlets, in Harbin, Beijing and Guangzhou.
