Buying protection
Article Abstract:
Bre-X Minerals (Canada), mining company, which has a project in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, Busang, has formed a joint venture with Sigit Harjojudanto, the eldest son of President Suharto of Indonesia, supposedly for the sake of security. The President has made it clear that issues of ownership have to be settled before he will approve contracts of work to enable projects to start up. The deal with Sigit gives Bre-X an association with a member of the President's family and with the potential commander of the armed forces.

New wave, old ties: Suharto loyalists take top military posts
Article Abstract:
Changes are underway in Indonesia's armed forces, although President Suharto is keeping a firm grip on the military. Many of the new generals have held posts with the president and their loyalty to him is unquestioning. It is thought that the 1970s generation of military professionals are more open-minded than their older colleagues, concentrating on traditional defence concerns.
