CARVING OUT A NEW FURNITURE NICHE
Article Abstract:
Gautier India Ltd (GIL) has launched the Gautier brand of home and office furniture made of particle board in Chennai. GIL is a 50:50 joint venture between the Zuari group and Seribos of France. The company has set up a Rs60 crore plant at Kakkalur near Chennai. The factory produces around 500-600 pieces per day. Particle board and accessories like screws and knobs are imported from Belgium. The Gautier furniture is priced between Rs7500- Rs35,000. The furniture is designed by designers from the National Institute of Design. GIL has set up 11 showrooms in non- metros like Salem, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Pondicherry. It plans to hold exhibitions to increase brand awareness. GIL has targeted a turnover of Rs40 crore to Rs50 crore in the first year of operations. It proposes to market its furniture in Karnataka by the end of 1998. (vv) >EN

Pokarna Granite is foraying into manufacture of granite furniture, vanity tops, monuments and other value added products. It is a 100 percent export oriented unit. It has eight units in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It has acquired machinery to produce value added products recently. It has projected a turnover of Rs16.44 crore for 1998-99. Nilkamal has launched moulded chairs in designs modeled on antique wooden furniture. The Harmony and Heritage range of chairs are available in five colours and cost Rs350 each. They can also be availed with an option of a cushioned seat for Rs600 each. The chairs are made of polypropylene and are stackable. The company has also launched an easy-to-assemble dining table costing Rs1150. (khr)
