CASHEW EXPORTS UP 7,660 TONNES IN 1997-98
Article Abstract:
The exports of cashew kernels from India grew by 11 percent at 76,323 tonnes in 1997-98 (68,633 tonnes in 1996-97) according to the Cashew Export Promotion Council. In terms of value, they grew by 8 percent at Rs1,383.90 crore (Rs1,285.50 crore). In 1997-98, India earned Rs1,390.64 crore from the export of cashew and allied products. Cashew accounted for 1.1 percent of India's total export earnings. The export of cashewnut shell liquid grew by 150 percent at 4,181 tonnes in terms of volume and Rs6.74 crore in terms value (1,735 tonnes in terms of volume and Rs2.77 crore in terms of value). According to the Commerce Ministry of the Government of India, the exports missed the target - $375 million - by one million US dollars. (ag)

India produced 360,000 tonnes of raw cashewnut in 1997-98 and Kerala contributed 1 lakh tonnes to the total output. India has a total processing capacity of 8 lakh tonnes. India imported 224,484 tonnes of raw cashewnut in 1997-98 to utilise the processing capacity. Cashew Export Promotion Council of India has suggested increasing the production of raw cashewnut in Kerala to meet the demand. (rk)
