CAUTION ON DUMPING
Article Abstract:
Globally, India ranks 12th in imposing anti-dumping duties. India recently revamped the directorate for anti-dumping and related duties. The anti-dumping duty is levied when the domestic industry is hit by the imports or specific unfair trade practice of exporting at lesser price than its domestic price. The Indian procedure of assessing the damage done to the domestic industry does not include the gains accruing to the other sections and the general economy of the industry. The European Union did not levy anti-dumping duty on unbleached cotton in the interest of the community even when its textile industry was hit by its imports. The consumer groups should appeal against the plea of the aggrieved industry. The welfare of the society should be considered when anti-dumping duty cases are examined by the directorate. (rk)

INDIAN SHIPBREAKING HOPES RUN AGROUND ON FIRM GLOBAL PRICES
Article Abstract:
The Budget for 1999-2000 had scrapped the 5 percent additional Customs duty which meant that Indian shipbreakers could import ships for demolition at cheaper prices, but prices started firming up in the international demolition markets anticipating increased demand from India. The prices of bulk carriers have increased by $5 to $8 per light displacement tonnes (ldt) while prices for tankers have increased by $5 per ldt. Indian shipbreakers have a 40 percent share of the world's demolition industry. (khr)

Article Abstract:
India is expected to report a fall in customs earnings during 1998-99. The customs earnings are expected to fall by Rs1,300 crore due to a reduction in the additional customs duty on imports to 4 percent from 8 percent. The customs earnings will also be affected by an increased outflow due to higher rate of duty drawbacks. The exemption of export promotion schemes from the 4 percent additional customs duty is also expected to affect the customs revenue. (ag)
