INDIA GOES ONE UP IN BASMATI PATENT TUSSLE
Article Abstract:
The US company RiceTec has voluntarily withdrawn its application for using the trademark Texmati in the United Kingdom for the special type of rice, which is not grown in India or Pakistan. India had filed a case against RiceTec in British Court a year back to stop the introduction of Texmati in the UK markets since it sounds similar to Basmati, which is grown in India. RiceTec, however, says that it has been using the Texmati brand name for over two decades in the United States for marketing the rice grown in the USA. (um)(psr)

The acquisition of patent rights in India by George Williamson of the UK on a method and apparatus for preparing processed tea leaves has met with opposition from Indian tea companies.
