CBR : 180 emplois perdus, 4,5 miliards investir
Article Abstract:
Belgian cement producer CBR has confirmed that faced with cheap imported cement and stricter environment standards, the company will have to rationalise its production units with 180 jobs to be cut in its Belgian units. In return, CBR is to invest a total of BFr 4.5bn over the next 2.5 years. The cement operations will benefit from BFr 1.8bn of investment. A new cement unit is to be set up at Gand to double cement output there. BFr 150/200mn will also be invested at Antoing to install a new dust removal system. CBR is also to set aside BFr 2.7bn to be invested at Lixhe to produce clinker although one of the two furnaces producing cement is to be shut down. Talks are to start with unions regarding the details of the job-cut plan.

La piraterie volerait 3.700 emplois/
Article Abstract:
According to BSA, should the piracy rate be cut to 27% from 39% today, 6,700 jobs would be created in the software industry in Belgium between 1997 and 2001, compared to an expected 3,000 jobs created with a 39% piracy rate. Today, over 11,000 workers depend on the software industry. 27% is the piracy level in the US, though Belgium is a little below the average in Europe (43%), according to BSA. In the Benelux countries, the software publishers lost some BFr 11bn in turnover due to piracy in 1997, Microsoft says. Software piracy reaches 53% in the Netherlands, 10 point above the European average.

Novoboch/La Louvi re ferme ses portes
Article Abstract:
The Novoboch factory in the Louvi re region of Belgium will close with the loss of 220 jobs. The site produces sanitary ceramic ware aimed at the middle to high range of the market. The closure is blamed on the financial losses the site has reported every year since 1990, and also because their products no longer match market demand. Production is guaranteed to continue until 15 July 1998, but will probably cease at the end of September or October 1998.
