FRANCE: EDF FOCUSES ON OVERSEAS
Article Abstract:
Electricite de France (EDF), French electric utility, by 2005 hopes to earn 50% of its turnover from overseas operations, versus one quarter in 2000. By 2004, EDF, which is the leading European producer of renewable energy, hopes to be ISO 14001 certified. EnBW supplies electricity to 3.4mn customers in Germany, London Electricity supplies gas or electricity to 2.8mn in the UK, and EDF also hopes to set up a Dutch operation, according to Alain Genel, EDF's managing director. Genel denies that EDF is protected, claiming that 30% of the French market has opened up to competition, and that it has lost four dozen large customers to Belgian, Spanish and German suppliers. He also says that EDF is committed to making 6,000 megawatts available to competitors over five years and that Electrabel and Endesa play a leading role in marketing and production in the French electricity sector. Having a fleet of 1,800 electric vehicles, offering advice to customers on energy conservation, being committed to renewable energy, such as solar and wind energy and using the cleanest technology, reflect the importance of the environment and sustainable development to the company.

Canada: A new power station for Hydro Quebec
Article Abstract:
Hydro Quebec, the Canadian electricity company, is going to invest US$ 500mn in the construction of a combined cycle power station which operates on natural gas. The work on this power station, which is located on the banks of the Beauharnois canal, will begin between now and the end of 2003 and will go into service at the end of 2006. The president of Hydro Quebec points out that hydraulic energy remains the group's favourite mode of production, but the construction of this power station is insurance against the risk of weak hydraulicity due to the drop in certain watercourses.
