COLGATE CUTS DIVIDEND ON LOW PROFIT
Article Abstract:
Colgate Palmolive (India) (CPI) has recommended a final dividend of 17 percent for 1997-98. The company had already paid an interim dividend of 13 percent earlier. The total dividend for 1997-98 has been reduced to 30 percent compared to 45 percent in 1996-97. The cut in dividend was due to drop in net profit in the first quarter of 1998-99. CPI has posted a net profit to Rs8.6 crore in the first quarter of 1998-99 (Rs21 crore during same period in 1997-98). It has recorded sales of Rs217 crore (Rs234 crore), interest of Rs0.05 crore (Rs0.01 crore) and tax of Rs4.6 crore (Rs12.3 crore). (gs)

COLGATE PALMOLIVE
Article Abstract:
The market share of Colgate Palmolive (CP) has fallen from 65 percent in 1995 to less than 57 percent now in the oral care segment. Its performance has been hit by lack of marketing innovation and too much dependence on a single product - the Colgate toothpaste. While CP's adspend has increased from Rs0.68 billion in 1996 to Rs1.48 billion now, its turnover growth has been almost nil. Its equity has grown by almost 22 percent in the past 4 years while its net profit has increased by only 3 percent. It also makes shampoos and soaps. (uh)
