Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) secured orders worth Rs2,685 crore in power segment for 1997-98. This includes orders for 1178 mw power plant equipment. As on March 1998, the company's has orders worth Rs10,000 crore. In 1997-98, BHEL overhauled 82 thermal sets of 15,783 mw. It has supplied spares worth of Rs873 crore (Rs691 crore in 1996-97). It has entered into joint venture with Siemens for improving the performance of old fossil fuelled power plants and with GE for servicing and repairing heavy duty gas turbines. Alstom Ltd proposes to undertake an operational restructuring programme. The programme will concentrate on the core competencies of power transmission and distribution, transportation and the new diesel power plants. The programme will also involve a huge reduction both at the employee and operational levels. Alstom Ltd may also sell its non-profitable divisions.
