Cable & Wireless unit, IBM to enter partnership

Cable and Wireless Communications PLC has confirmed payment of $3 billion that is called for in a 10-year computer-service outsourcing alliance with International Business Machines Corp. IBM's Global Services unit will take in 1,000 employees from CWC, while IBM will add another 400 workers to the project. IBM will supply the customer-care and billing systems, provisioning/order-processing services, plus e-mail and computer desk-top support, to the cable television and telephone firm. CWC will retain its responsibilities in overseeing telecommunications network software, as well as for computer strategy and security.

WPP, Asatsu announce advertising partnership
Article Abstract:
WPP Group PLC of London, UK, and Japan-based advertising firm Asatsu Inc. announced a worldwide partnership that will call for the two companies to cooperate to support customers. The WPP-Asatsu partnership will call for WPP to hold a 20% interest in the combined company, according to Asatsu, which is slated to merge in January 1999 with Japanese advertising firm Dai-Ichi Kikaku Co. Meanwhile, new shares will be issued by Asatsu to WPP prior to their planned merger, thus making WPP to own around 23% of Asatsu. WPP Group comprises key advertising firms that include J. Walter Thompson Ltd. and Ogilvy & Mather.

S&N profit falls 3%, but brewer remains upbeat
Article Abstract:
Scottish & Newcastle PLC (S&N) posted a decline of 3% in its yearly profits for the year ending May 2, 1999. However, the brewer predicted that it would see an improved financial performance in the future as a result of increased spending among consumers. S&N posted 402.2 million pound sterling in pretax profits. The company also announced that it is seeking a international brewing deal worth as much as 2 billion pound sterling (3.08 billion euros).
