Spring is the best time for tourists to visit Japan. Although they will miss the cherry blossom season and the Frisbee Dog Golden Festa, there are other activities to occupy their time. Two Eastern European companies are staging two plays, one of which is 'Carmen,' in Jun 1999. For art enthusiasts, Old World masterpieces will be displayed at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum until Jul 11, 1999. Another interesting development is the provocatively low round-trip fares being offered by Japanese airlines. The downside to this is the labyrinthine passages in the international airport which discourage newly arrived tourists.

NEC technology points to future with prototype fingerprint scanner
Article Abstract:
NEC of Japan has developed a technology that could explore the possibilities of the use of fingerprints in personal computers. The company's research and development team came up with a prototype fingerprint scanner, which is as big as a book of matches and attaches to a portable PC. A possible use for the technology could be replacement for log-in passwords, although the extent is expected to go beyond security purposes. Other possibilities include connection to networks as well as portable computers without keyboards and finger-controlled mobile phones.

Satellite broadcasters try to reach Japanese behind the steering wheel

Satellite broadcasters are pushing to develop the digital satellite television technology to cover the huge Japanese automobile market. The move includes formation of the Mobile Broadcasting consortium of Toshiba, Toyota Motor, Fujitsu, Kenwood, Denso and Alpine and other businesses. The new operation predicts that it could provide the proposed service to approximately 13 million cars by 2009, with each subscriber will be charged a monthly fee of 700 yen for the privilege and up to 84 billion yen in yearly revenue.
